THE PIGEON HOUSE

Pigeon House is a series of photographic images assembled into the book. These photographs are documental representation of an old derelict building – the abandoned ESB power plant at Poolbeg, It was also used by the military as a barracks. Electricity was first generated there in 1903 and it was used until it was decommissioned in 1976. I was always fascinated by industrial architecture, especially abandoned ‘ghost’ structures where many things are left untouched since previous owners or occupants were present.

DOM DZIENNY, DOM NOCNY

Dom Dzienny, Dom Nocny (House of Day, House of Night) is a novel by Olga Tokarczuk, published in 1998. Nowa Ruda is a small town in Silesia, an area that has been a part of Poland, Germany, and the former Czechoslovakia in the past. When the narrator moves into the area, she discovers that everyone and everything has its own story. With the help of Marta, her enigmatic neighbour, the narrator accumulates these stories, tracing the history of Nowa Ruda from the founding of the town to the lives of its saints, from the caller who wins the radio quiz every day to the tale of the man who causes international tension when he dies on the border, one leg on the Polish side, the other on the Czech side. Each of the stories represents a brick and they interlock to reveal the immense monument that is the town. What emerges is the message that the history of any place, no matter how humble, is limitless, that by describing or digging at the roots of a life, a house, or a neighbourhood, one can see all the connections, not only with one's self and one's dreams but also with all of the universe.

BIEGUNI

Bieguni (Flights) is a fragmentary novel by the Polish author Olga Tokarczuk. The original Polish title refers to runaways (runners, bieguni), Old Believers, who believe that being in constant motion is a trick to avoid evil.  Set between the 17th and 21st centuries, the novel is a "philosophical rumination on modern-day travel". It is structured as a series of vignettes, some fictional, and some based on fact – among them that of the Dutch anatomist Philip Verheyen's discovery of the achilles tendon, and the story of Ludwika Jędrzejewicz, the sister of the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, transporting his heart back to Warsaw.

ZAGUBIONA DUSZA

Zagubiona Dusza (The Lost Soul) is a deeply moving reflection on our capacity to live in peace with ourselves, to remain patient, attentive to the world. It is a story that beautifully weaves together the voice of the Nobel Prize-winning Polish novelist Olga Tokarczuk who created a parallel narrative universe full of secrets, evocative of another time. Here a man has forgotten what makes his heart feel full. He moves to a house away from all that is familiar to him to wait for his soul to return.

SAPIENS & HOMODEUS

These two books by Yuval Noah Harari have received worldwide acclaim and have been praised for their insights on the history and future of humankind. If Sapiens articulates how the scientific revolution is leading this new development of humankind, the second book, Homo Deus, focuses on its consequences: a (near) future where humans are intrinsically connected with the data flow that already controls most of the systems necessary for our society to exist.
